Gemini 2.5 Migration Series • Part 2 of 3

How Does This Affect Me? Strict thought_signature, thinking_level & Breaking Changes

Published November 2, 2026 • Primary Google Sources: Gemini 3.8 Flash Migration Guide & Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite Migration Guide
The Engineering Summary:

When Google auto-routes your traffic on December 1, your requests will not simply be processed by a faster, cheaper engine—they will encounter a stricter schema validator. If your application relies on legacy function calling signatures or older thinking configurations, your API calls will throw HTTP 400 validation errors instead of quietly returning model completions.

1. The 3 Breaking Changes You Must Fix Before Dec 1

1. Function Calling & thought_signature Validation

In Gemini 2.5, function call schemas allowed permissive arguments, and intermediate chain-of-thought blocks were optional. In Gemini 3.x (including gemini-3.8-flash and gemini-4-argon), multi-step tool calls require verified thought_signature validation. If an agent loops over tools, each returned tool response must preserve the turn's signature to prevent hallucinated tool injection.

2. thinking_level Replaces thinking_budget

Gemini 2.5 used a numerical token budget: thinking_budget: 1024. In Gemini 3.x, thinking effort is discrete and standardized across all models via thinking_level:

3. Removal of Prefilled Model Turns & Legacy Sampling

Prefilled assistant turns (forcing the model to begin its reply with a specific JSON bracket or phrase) are completely deprecated in Gemini 3.x. Instead, use native Structured Outputs (response_schema / response_mime_type: "application/json"). Legacy sampling overrides (such as excessive temperature ranges > 2.0) are also strictly checked.

2. Code Migration: Before & After Snippets

TypeScript / JavaScript (`@google/genai` v2.32+)

// BEFORE (Deprecated Gemini 2.5 Pro pattern)
- const response = await ai.models.generateContent({
-   model: 'gemini-2.5-pro',
- contents: 'Analyze this codebase for security vulnerabilities.',
-   config: {
-     thinkingConfig: { thinkingBudget: 2048 },
-     temperature: 1.2,
-   }
- });

// AFTER (Production Gemini 3.8 Flash pattern)
+ import { GoogleGenAI } from '@google/genai';
+ const ai = new GoogleGenAI();
+ const response = await ai.models.generateContent({
+   model: 'gemini-3.8-flash',
+ contents: 'Analyze this codebase for security vulnerabilities.',
+   config: {
+     thinkingConfig: { thinkingLevel: 'medium' },
+     responseMimeType: 'application/json',
+   }
+ });

Python (`google-genai` v2.34+)

# BEFORE (Deprecated Gemini 2.5 Flash pattern)
- response = client.models.generate_content(
-     model='gemini-2.5-flash',
-     contents=user_prompt,
-     config={'thinking_budget': 512}
- )

# AFTER (Production Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite pattern)
+ from google import genai
+ client = genai.Client()
+ response = client.models.generate_content(
+     model='gemini-3.5-flash-lite',
+     contents=user_prompt,
+     config={'thinking_config': {'thinking_level': 'low'}}
+ )
